This last Wednesday, I taught my first class. I worked with a partner before a group of six students. My partner was excellent, and his contribution to the lesson plan was large. I want to match his quality of work, otherwise it’ll feel like I am not doing enough.
It was nerve wracking entering into the day, but at the same time, it wasn’t my first time standing in front of an audience. The teaching of a lesson, and the telling of a story have much in common. The main thing is to ensure one is prepared.
I had an issue with not having a video prepared which I wanted to show, but fortunately, my partner had it lined up, and saved me. This isn’t something I wish to repeat. I really do prefer having everything I need and want on hand, but as with any production, it is important to improvise and adapt to reduced or changed circumstances.
The activity I administered, a game of “Would You Rather”, worked well. The students seemed to enjoy participating. It felt like could’ve filled quite a bit more time, but there were other activities which needed to happen. It being a first time running it, it proved a valuable lesson in blocking time for activities. On the other hand, I took too much time in running this activity. I kept wanting to play. It is an interesting technique, and one I will probably continually utilize to help students work on their speaking skills.
Overall, this first lesson was invaluable. The lessons in preparation, blocking time, and administrating activities will stick in mind. I’m glad to have gone through this.
