Something I’m beginning to take away is lessons need to continue moving forward. One step at a time, building toward an end goal. In this case, it’s the learning of more and more English.
This lesson had a handful of vocabulary terms the teachers wanted the students to learn. They did four games, each of which was to have the students utilize memory, visual, and sound. The students had to remember the terms for each of the pictures presented through the whole class. The activities used included card games, guessing games, memorization, and finally playing to a beat.
The teachers led the students in singing, and managed the kids from becoming too hyper. They even presented an opportunity for the most ambitious kid to show off, but for the majority of the lesson, had to continually manage his energy, as he seemed poised on the edge of the zoomies, like a hyperactive puppy.
It seemed this lesson was being observed by the parents, too. That must have been an enormous amount of stress on the teachers and students, but both groups seemed to manage otherwise.
Something noticeable about this lesson was it was taught in English for the most part, but for certain instructions was taught in the L1: Korean. This will probably be something I could face if I manage to make it to Japan. I’ll be the teacher for an hour, and then for the other twenty-three, I’ll be the learner (of Japanese). If all goes as planned, anyway.
